Can you speak one or many languages as a near native? If the answer is yes, you can make some extra money working as a translator. A translator has to rewrite a text into other language keeping its original idea. Translators can work in a translation agency. No matter what your first language is, all you need is a full knowledge of both languages: expressions, grammar structures, etc. A translator has to worry about giving sense to the translated text in order to keep the original meaning. Working in a translation agency, is a good way to earn some money, without going out of your house. On the other hand, if you do not want to work in a translation agency you can get a job by yourself or get a job freelance, in this way you can still make some money but you will have more flexible schedules. Also you will work for many people at the same time. However, you have to be careful if you do this, because, sometimes, people accept more jobs than they can really do, as a result they do not finish on time or if they finish, they do a poor or incorrect job. This will make you lose customers and money. Accept only what you can do. Remember that the translation is a process which has to be done carefully in order to get the better results. To translate a document, it is necessary to understand both languages perfectly, also to identify and understand the main ideas. When the same ideas are expressed in both languages, it is possible to say that the translation is correct. The complexity of translation is directly related to the grammatical differences among the languages. All languages have different grammar rules, differences in time, in genre, etc. But differences are not only in grammar, languages have each its own expressions, some with no real logical meaning in the other language. For example, if we are doing a Spanish translation from English, there are lots of expressions which do not mean the same in Spanish, like for example: The exam was piece of cake, if we translate word by word –like software translators do- the sentences in Spanish would understand that the objective of the exam was doing a piece of cake. However, a translator who knows the languages expressions will know that piece of cake is an expression which means that something was pretty easy or simple. |
